Welcome 2015 Sunrise Nicasio Reservoir, Ca.
Nicasio Reservoir Novato, Ca.
Nicasio Reservoir is a man made reservoir located in Marin County California. It covers about 845 acres and the construction of Seeger Dam began on the Nicasio Creek in 1961. Seeger Dam is 115 feet tall and 400 feet long the lake is near the town of Nicasio.
My idea of capturing these images arose years ago when I lived in the town of Inverness Park which is right outside of Point Reyes Station. I would travel this stretch of road regularly which was my morning commute for a short time to Petaluma until I got a job in Point Reyes. This stretch of road is featured in many of images because of the beauty that it beholds.
On New Years Eve my family went out to dinner with my wife’s Dad great food and great company. We came home and enjoyed the evening with our 4 year old daughter trying too watch the ball drop in Times Square. All a while I was planning my morning sunrise photo's. I found a website called the Photographers ephemeris which is an awesome website for a photographer. This website allows you to put a pin on a map and shows you the sunrise, sunset, moonrise, and moonset with times of day along with topography. So I scoured the surrounding area looking for a place to go I kept getting drawn back to the reservoir.
New Years Day I woke up at 5am and headed out for a quick stop at Starbucks (Starbucks will be in a lot of blogs) and I was off to the lake. The morning was crisp and clear temp in the car read 31 degrees it was still dark when I arrived which gave me ample time to scout the area where I would be working. I could see the light in the sky starting to form where the sun would eventually be rising. I hurriedly walked around the shoreline trying to find the best subject and found a rock just off the shoreline. This shot would give me what I was looking for, the idea in my head was to have the broken cat tails in the foreground and this rock just past that and the beauty of the water and sunrise beyond.
My next image that I wanted to capture was the exact moment that the sun peaked over the crest of the mountain range before me. I wanted that rock and just to the right of me there were these cattail looking weeds. It is funny how fast time goes at this point the sun made its appearance and I captured the image I wanted success!! As soon as the sun was rising into the sky I thought to my self what a perfect start of the New Year welcome 2015!
