Raging Cataract Falls Fairfax Ca.

These waterfalls are located in Fairfax, Ca. they are on Fairfax Bolinas Rd located on Alpine Lake. There are about 9 different cascades of falls and the trail winds up though the falls weaving back and forth. These falls are best viewed during the winter months do to the rain fall, if you visit in the summer there really isn't much to see except the maybe a little trickle. The trail is 2.9 miles out and back and is a fairly decent hike due to the elevation change. It is a beautiful hike wooded and very loud with the water rushing down these falls after a while you get lost with the noise of the water.

Scott and I headed out here when it was raining we new it would be an adventure and we were ready for it. I had my tripod and camera protected with a rain sleeve (Thanks babe for the early Christmas gift) and off we started up the trail. The beginning of the trail neighbors Alpine Lake and the water is so crystal clear you can see the bottom littered with logs and trees. You will come to some wooden bridges that have the big falls on your left and if you look to the right there are tiny little fingers of waterfalls merging together. We stopped at the first cascade and I set up for my shot and the rain is pouring and big droplets of water falling out of the trees I was trying my best to keep everything dry I had a towel that I would hold over top of the camera while I was taking the picture. It is quite dark in this wooded area and I think I had about 30 second exposures.

After that we headed back up the falls and on to the next cascade and there were plenty to see. I captured quite a few more and by this time everything was soaked I didn't have the best rain gear on but I really didn't care much about my self I was more concerned about the camera gear. I was able to keep my gear reasonably dry but I was soaked. One of my shots I made my way out into the middle of the stream and ended up getting my feet soaked but it was definitely worth it. Scott had the correct gear on and was fine but at this point I was ready to go back and get warm and dry. I was so caught up in the moment when we got to that first cascade I put down my coffee mug and forgot it.  So now we were on the hunt for my coffee mug while we twisted our way back down the hill. It is crazy when your heading back down it is a completely different experience because it is a whole new view. I had to stop at a few more places naturally if you have a camera in your hands you have to take the picture!  Well I ended up leaving the coffee mug at our first stop and with coffee cup in hand we headed back to the car! Very cool place but I would probably save the trip for the winter when you can actually experience these great waterfalls and not just a pile of huge boulders.
